1. The Properties of Polyurethanes Based on Synthetic Polyhydroxybutyrate for Medical Application The Properties of Polyurethanes Based on Synthetic Polyhydroxybutyrate for Medical Application.pdf

Brzeska J., Janik H., Kowalczuk M., Rutkowska M.
Polyurethanes belong to materials commonly used in many different fields of our life. Very important part of their application is using as biomaterial. But their properties have to be appropriate for contact with living organisms. Using in synthesis of polyurethanes the synthetic analog of natural polyhydroxybutyrate - telechelic atactic poly[(R,S)-3-hydroxybutyrate] (a-PHB) could make them more biocompatible. The investigated polyurethanes were synthesized with aliphatic and aromatic diisocyanate. Their soft segments were built with polycaprolactone and a-PHB. The physical, mechanical, thermal properties and degradability of obtained polyurethanes were estimated. The polyurethane samples were also checked for medical application. After the extraction in hexane and sterilization their influence on blood parameters and on pathogenic microorganisms were estimated. The obtained polyurethanes were amorphous and hydrophilic but the amount of absorbed water was small and is on the same level for both materials. Sterilization of aliphatic polyurethane samples insignificantly changed the mechanical properties whereas aromatic polyurethane seemed to be more sensitive to conditions of sterilization. The results of polyurethane degradation indicated higher influence of oxidative than hydrolytic mechanism. The presence of aliphatic polyurethane decreased the growth of some pathogenic microorganisms. Both kinds of polymers did not change the parameters of whole blood. In conclusion it could be stated that aliphatic polyurethane based on atactic poly[(R,S)-3-hydroxybutyrate] displayed the properties appropriate for further investigations for medical application without the risk of generation the cancerogenic degradation products which could be formed from polyurethane obtained with aromatic diisocyanate.
2. Chosen Economical Aspects of Vessel’s Operational Speed Chosen Economical Aspects of Vessel’s Operational Speed.pdf

Jackowski K.
Determination of ship’s operational speed for various conditions of a voyage is dealt with in this paper. Major economical criteria of speed optimization are considered and analysed, as well as their modification due to occurence of speed limitation in a seaway. Examplary calculations of economically justifiable operational speed are given and graphs of costs and profits, as the functions of speed, are presented. The last paragraph of the paper contains a few practical remarks about dependance of optimal solutions on some external factors.
3. Conjugated Linoleic Acid and the Atherosclerosis in Animal Models – Review Conjugated Linoleic Acid and the Atherosclerosis in Animal Models – Review.pdf

Janczy A., Steinka I.
Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) refers to a group of isomeric forms of linoleic acid (LA) containing two conjugated sites of unsaturation. During last 20 years, CLA has been the subject of investigations considered on its possible benefits on health. Both CLA isomers are found in products from ruminants because of the action of rumen micro-organisms in fatty acid biohydrogenation. The purpose of this review is to underline the potential for cis-9, trans-11 and trans-10, cis-12 CLA to modify atherosclerosis, with focus on the rabbit, hamster and the mouse examples.
4. Oxygen Transfer Measurements at Surface Aerators in Waste Water as Basis for Energy Saving in Aeration Oxygen Transfer Measurements at Surface Aerators in Waste Water as Basis for Energy Saving in Aeration.pdf

Lompe D., Nurlu-Bruns A.
Oxygen transfer measurements were carried out in order to compare surface aerators under operating conditions in waste water. A simple method was used without using chemicals like cobalt or sulfite. Results show incomplete mixing of basins at high biological activity that lead to mass transfer data not comparable with data of standardized fresh water tests, but different types of aerators could be compared under local operating conditions as basis for investment decisions.
5. Labelling of Organic and Natural Cosmetic Products in Harmonized Standards Labelling of Organic and Natural Cosmetic Products in Harmonized Standards.pdf

Newerli-Guz J.
Ingredients of natural/organic origin for consumers may play a crucial role in cosmetics purchase. Lack of information about labelling of those products causes insufficient consumers awareness. There are two main standards of certification on the continuous developing natural/organic cosmetics market. The aim of this article is to gain knowledge about labelling of natural and organic products.
6. Selected Aspects of the Quality of Life of the Elderly Selected Aspects of the Quality of Life of the Elderly.pdf

Śmiechowska M.
The turn of the 20th and 21st centuries has been a period of socioeconomic turbulence in many regions of the world. One of the observed phenomena is the ageing of the nations, particularly in the developed countries. The Polish society is also ageing. Statistical data show that after 2050 every third person living in Poland would pass the retirement age. The senior society is not homogenous. The practitioners recognize the age ranges 60+, 70+, and 80+. In each of these groups, other health, living, economic, and social problems are observed. The solutions to these problems and fulfilling the needs of the seniors are the tasks crucial to many areas of the social life and influence the general life quality of the elderly. The recent research shows that the elderly are one of the most numerous consumer groups. The changes in the service market indicate an urgent need for aiming special market products at this consumer group. Another area that requires urgent changes and adaptation to new needs of seniors are the branches of spa services, wellness, rehabilitation, but with a totally new approach to tackle this problem. Changes should be welcome also in the areas of nutritional, cosmetic, and cosmetic medicine services. Along with the increasing number of elderly people it became necessary to care for their needs. The aim of this paper is to present the range of problems connected with the elderly people.
7. Power Transmission from Offshore Wind Farms Power Transmission from Offshore Wind Farms.pdf

Völker T.
The future for wind power generation in Germany is offshore wind energy. The preferred concept for power transmission over long distances from the offshore wind farm to the mainland is the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) power transmission. In this paper a new transmission concept based on HVDC is presented.
